4 Conclusion
The current technologies in place, including IdentiFlight, WTBird, DTBird, BirdSentinel/SafeWind, TADS, and Noise Deterrents (i.e. Acoustic Lighthouse) are on similar paths to reducing bird collisions at wind parks. Each individual system, however, is designed in a slightly different manner to meet its target objectives—detecting, identifying and deterring species being some of the main priorities. The SWOT analysis provides a general overview of where the state of technology is at now, and where it can be improved for future use and application.
This paper introduces a newly developed collision-avoidance bird-tracking algorithm, specifically designed for use at both the operational and acquisition phases of wind project development. The need for this technology stems from the growing attention given to avian deaths caused by wind turbine operation as well as some of the political implications arising from it. As wind turbines continue to populate the planet, the dangers for avian wildlife increase as well. Not only are mortality rates skewed, but also they are quite low in comparison with other sources such as glass on buildings or fossil fuels. Despite these low numbers, however, it is dually important to note that achieving sustainability in its greatest sense means to find a synchronicity between renewable energy transition and wildlife conservation. In order to negate any consequence of renewables on wildlife, the application of high-tech spatial technology is necessary and helpful.
Therefore, the novel MMP algorithm will introduce wind manufacturers and wind project managers to a real-time updated visual of migration pathways where migratory birds fly around wind turbines. MMP will use magnetoreception as inspiration to reveal a deeper scientific way of understanding where and when birds fly during seasonal migration. By transforming and delimiting local magnetic field data into visually distinct migratory flying channels, this will provide new knowledge and thus save many species from oncoming death. This type of spatial information and research will help the wind industry make informed, science-based decisions about where future wind energy projects can be sited and how they can be operated to minimize the impact on migrating wildlife, while still providing much-needed alternative energy [34]. Moreover, MMP will be achieved through image-processing machine learning and it will be designed with the help of eBird database, magnetic fields, motion sensor video cameras, and/or radar. Some of the newly proposed additions to the MMP technology is, particularly, eBird database and magnetic field data as well as the AI-based mobile app of Acoustic Lighthouse. All of the proposed technologies necessary to develop MMP provide useful spatial and site-specific information relative to the wind park in question. The purpose of MMP is not only to visualize current migratory pathways around wind parks, but also to predict future migratory pathways based on historic data.
